About Christopher Finkle

I have been painting in oils on board and canvas since 2012, when I began studying at the Jesus Estevez Art Academy. I enjoy landscapes, portraiture, and painting en plein air. My inspiration includes Sargent, Rembrandt, Monet, van Gogh, and more recent painters from the United States. My artwork hangs in homes across Canada and the United States.

At the easel

I often begin with a grid to transfer my subject onto a primed canvas or board. An underpainting establishes light, medium, and dark values. I then build colour, blend, and refine the details before the final varnish. Oil paint’s slow drying time gives me room to develop a painting in stages.

Exhibitions and press

I have taken part in en plein air events in Belleville since I began painting. In 2019, I led a class of students as part of a student show during community arts week in the Quinte region. That year, I also received special recognition at the Parrott Art Gallery. I participated in the gallery’s online exhibition “Places and Faces” and have taken a series of life-drawing courses.

My work has also been shown in Art à la Carte at the Ontario Legislature, a program that brings work by Ontario artists to the Legislative Building’s In Camera Dining Room.

Greg Teal explores my painting practice in Homegrown Artist, a Quinte Arts Council feature first published in the Spring 2026 issue of Umbrella.

I have painted many commissions. My work has been acquired by professional athletes, musicians, a Canadian brigadier-general, and a Canadian author appointed to the Order of Canada. I have also donated paintings to the Rotary Club of Belleville in support of its humanitarian programs.
