This second set features four prints of my studies of Rembrandt’s self-portraits and his paintings of older men.
As I’ve said in the past, there is no better feeling than having created a study after a master who has gone before us. From my early beginnings, I gravitated towards Rembrandt’s unmistakable style: the light on a face, penetrating eyes that tell an individual’s story, brushstrokes in the skin tones, and the looseness of the hair and clothing.
Studying the masters is one of the most fulfilling pleasures I have found as an artist.
This series is not complete. I have one painting in a private collection and many more reference images on my tablet that I would like to paint.
It was never my intention to copy a master for the sake of saying, “Oh, I can do that.” I wanted to immerse myself in the experience of portrait painting through the eyes of one of the world’s finest painters. And I thank him for the opportunity!
